OCHS Employee Spotlight: Larissa Bixby, Program Director

This month’s Employee Spotlight is shining on Program Director, Larissa Bixby.

Instead of my usual interview, I’ve written up a short “About Me” using the same prompts as in past Spotlight Interviews. I’ve been with the Osceola County Historical Society for two years now. I began as part time Program Coordinator and was promoted to full-time Program Director. I’m from Louisville, Kentucky, but I have lived all over the Midwestern and Southern United States in my pursuit of an education.

Christmas Eve 1914 began like any other day during the war, but as evening neared, singing was heard across the trenches. British soldiers were reporting that the Germans illuminated their trenches and were singing Christmas carols. This was taking place spontaneously and simultaneously down the lines. Some places along the lines even reported an impromptu soccer game taking place.

Mapes, three of John’s grandsons – Victor Loris Mapes, Dana Austin Mapes and Theodore Augustus Mapes would serve their country in the 1940s, as John did over seventy-five years earlier.
